Burr...It sure is COLD!!
(or at least it was when we started this newsletter)
Looks like old man winter has hit, which gives
us the
perfect
theme for our newsletter.
We′d like to dedicate this
issue to:
Tips on Car Care in
the Winter
It is important to remember how hard the winter months
can be on our vehicles. We need to pay special attention
to them during these harsh weather conditions.
1. First priority should be to make sure your antifreeze
is good. Just because it was good last year, does not
mean it will still be good for this year.
2. If your car sits outside it may be wise to change to
a lighter weight oil to help the engine start better.
Using heavier oils is like turning the crank over in
tar. A 5W30 oil makes it easier to start when the
temperature starts to dip.
3. Another hot item to consider would be an engine block
heater. There are a couple of different styles on the
market and they can be a real lifesaver in sub-zero
weather.
4. Gas additives, such as Isopropyl alcohol, can be
added protection for preventing your fuel lines from
freezing on those below zero days.
5. And lastly, and maybe most importantly, pack a safety
kit to carry with you in your vehicle. A few good things
to include in your kit might be:
An empty 3 lb. coffee can w/lid.
A candle
Matches
A good flashlight w/ batteries
A 2-way radio |
A stocking cap
A granola bar
A package of instant soup
A stadium blanket
A cellular phone |
If you become stranded on the roadside, you can use the lid
of the coffee can to place the candle on and light it for
heat and light. The coffee can can be used as a scoop to
scoop up snow which can be melted with the flame of the
candle and used to mix with the package of instant soup if
you are stranded for a long period of time. The granola bar
is also for extra energy while you wait to be rescued.
** REMEMBER** When traveling in the winter time, allow
yourself plenty of time to get where you are going so you
can drive slowly. If the weather is too bad turn around and
go back! And don′t venture out at all in hazardous
conditions if it′s not necessary.
Hopefully these tips are helpful. We′d like to wish all of
you a safe and
healthy New Year!
